Flushing Meadows Corona Park Playground: A World-Class Amenity Reopens its Doors

In 1645, Lawrence purchased 900 acres of land from the Matinecock Native Americans who occupied the region. Fast forward to today, and that land has evolved into a world-class amenity - Flushing Meadows Corona Park playground. This beloved spot is not only home to an Olympic-sized swimming pool with an adjustable floor and diving tank for competitions but also a year-round NHL-regulation hockey rink.

After being forced to close in January 2020 due to emergency repairs, the facility has finally reopened its doors to swimmers of all ages. I am thrilled to welcome back visitors who can now take advantage not only of the swimming pool but also of the numerous programs that drew approximately 350,000 visitors per year before it was closed.

The reopening comes after a series of renovations aimed at increasing the center's longevity. As part of these efforts, five swim classes are returning, and two new classes have been introduced for the first time ever. These include a Swim Instruction Program for Water Safety Instructors and Youth and Adult Hydro-Fit, a competitive swim training and conditioning class.

Council Member Sandra Ung has long heard from constituents asking when the Aquatics Center in Flushing Meadows Corona Park would reopen to the public. Now, thanks to the tireless efforts of the Parks Department, this beloved spot is once again open for business.

Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue expressed her excitement at reopening this iconic facility, saying, 'We are beyond excited to reopen this beloved Aquatics Center to the community, a true focal point for water education, swim training, and exercise for many Queens swimmers.' The facility provides pool access to Central Queens and offers a range of programs including Learn to Swim, Youth Swim Teams, Adult and Senior Water Aerobics, and Swim for Life.

In addition to its aquatic offerings, the Flushing Meadows Aquatic Center is also home to a 110,000-square-foot recreation center that caters to a diverse community. On February 27, 2023, Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue joined elected officials, community board representatives, and community members to celebrate the reopening of this iconic facility.

As we look forward to the future, the Parks Department is already planning additional projects to repair and upgrade the facility's roof, which will start in 2025. For now, however, let us rejoice at the reopening of this world-class amenity and the many opportunities it provides for Queens residents to stay active, learn new skills, and have fun.
